The local fishing scene has been very good over the last few weeks. We have been out everyday for the last 6 days on charters with good results both here in Vancouver and over on the island. Fishing off the ‘Hump’ and closer to Bowen Island has been producing 1-6 fish a trip with very impressive sizes. I believe the fishing would be excellent if the massive amounts of Hake were not around. We must have caught over 20 hake yesterday, and it seemed every time we checked our lines we had hake on the lines. The times were were able to keep the lines free from them we hooked salmon.
Nice chinook off the Hump for Jocelyn O’Leary with guide Guy Dale.
A few smaller chinook from local waters
We had 3 trips this week over to the Gulf Islands with mixed results. We hooked several chinook and ling cod each trip but it was not as hot as we expected. We heard very encouraging results from our colleagues over on the island yesterday as we were fishing locally. For the month of June the Gulf Islands are the place to be for some great angling. We spend a lot of time over there chasing salmon and ling cod from Nanaimo to Porlier Pass and spots in between. The local June fishery is hit and miss so going across the strait is the trip to do. We offer 8 hour and 10 hour options for the Gulf Islands.
17lb. Chinook trolling near Bowen Island for Francis visiting from the Pilippines
Fishing has been great over in Ucluelet the last few weeks as well. Lots of limits of fat, chinook and good numbers of halibut are being hooked while trolling for chinook. We have been fishing the 5 mile bank, Great Bear and Swale Rock. This is a very nice surprise as we normally don’t expect halibut until later in the month.
Ling cod and rock fish are jumping in the boat. This is a great time of year for a Ucluelet fishing charter, before the crowds and the high season rates. We had several trips out lately with limits of chinook salmon, halibut and ling cod.
